Open Letter: United for Climate and Community:
A Multicultural Vision for COP31 in Australia and the Pacific
Published by Asian Australians for Climate Solutions (AAFCS)
Date: October 2025
Our Call:
As a multicultural alliance of community leaders, organisations, and individuals, we call on the Australian Government to ensure that COP31, co-hosted by Australia and the Pacific, places people, culture, and community at the heart of climate action.
Climate change is not only an environmental crisis. It is a human story that affects our health, our homes, our livelihoods, and our shared future. Across every culture and language, clean air, safe water, and healthy lands are the foundation of life.
Our Vision for COP31:
We envision a COP31 that brings together voices from all cultures, across oceans and generations, and reflects the diversity of Australia and our Pacific neighbours.
We call for:
- A Health-Centred COP31 that recognises climate change as the greatest health challenge of our time and protects the wellbeing of people and planet.
- Pacific and First Nations Leadership that honours Indigenous wisdom, sovereignty, and stewardship in guiding climate resilience and adaptation.
- Meaningful Multicultural Participation that ensures migrant and diaspora communities, who are among the most affected and least represented, have an equal voice in decision-making.
- A Fair Transition Away from Fossil Fuels that supports workers, families, and small businesses through a just and inclusive transformation.
- Education, Arts, and Youth Empowerment that connect culture, creativity, and climate awareness to inspire collective action.
Our Shared Responsibility:
From the coral islands of the Pacific to the dry plains of South Australia, the impacts of climate change are already visible through floods, bushfires, heatwaves, and toxic algae blooms along our coasts.
We cannot wait. Health, equity, and climate action must move together as one.
Asian Australians for Climate Solutions stands in solidarity with the Climate and Health Alliance (CAHA) and the wider health and environmental community in calling for a COP31 that safeguards health, strengthens partnerships, and secures a safe and sustainable future for all.
At the launch of this open letter, from 16 September to 30 September 2025 (within 2weeks), AAFCS gathered support from more than 240 individual signatories and 36 community and NGO partners who co-signed to express their commitment to a healthier, fairer, and more inclusive climate future.
